King's Cinema

Located on Bentley Street (which no longer exists) off Lancashire Hill to the north of the town centre. The King’s Cinema was opened on 31st October 1913 with 950 seats, many on long wooden benches. It had a shakey start and it was closed on a number of occasions for not complying with the Cinematograph Act. The King’s Cinema was one of the last of the Stockport cinemas to install sound equipment when on 6th April 1931 it screened Maurice Chevalier in “The Love Parade”, using a RCA sound system. The seating capacity had been reduced to 700. The King’s Cinema was closed in late-1960.

It was taken over by the Hutchinson Cinemas chain and converted into a bingo club, which was still open in 1966. It closed soon after and it was demolished in a redevelopment of the area.
