Saddleworth Picture Palace

Uppermill is a village in the civil parish of Saddleworth, a collection of villages in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester.

The Uppermill Picture Palace was opened in September 1913 by the Milnbridge Picture Palace Company, with Mr A. Tinker as manager and Mr J. E. Chapman as pianist.

In 1918 it was renamed the Saddleworth Picture Palace. It closed at Whitsuntide in 1923, then re-opened under the management of Mr H. Pearson that August with screenings of “Queen of the Moulin Rouge”, starring Martha Mansfield, and Rudolph Valentino in “Blood and Sand”.

In 1929 the building was purchased by Robert Plummer and his wife Vera. They ran the Saddleworth Picture Palace until it closed in 1959.

The building was demolished, and the site acquired by the Central Garage next door for the construction of an extension.
