Savoy Cinema

In Oldham, Greater Manchester, the Savoy Cinema opened on Monday 12th October 1925. The handsome façade on the main Huddersfield Road led to stalls seating 560 and a balcony with 330 seats. There was a ladies' waiting room inside the main entrance. In the early, silent days musical accompaniment was provided by a trio under the direction of Mr Denny.

A British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system was installed. In 1934 William Walker Lloyd was appointed the general manager, a position he held for the next 23 years.

By 1953, according to the Kinematograph Year Book, the Savoy Cinema’s seating capacity had been reduced to 725.

Mr Lloyd left just two years before the Savoy Cinema, by then owned by Savoy (Entertainments) Oldham Ltd, closed, in July 1959.

The building was demolished, and Scouthead Car Centre was built on the site.
