The Picture House was opened by 1927 when it was operated by the Thomas Ormiston chain. In March 1928 it was taken over by the Denman/Gaumont British chain. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system. In 1933 it was taken over by an independent operator.

In 1945 it was renamed Rio Cinema. It was closed in June 1960 when it was gutted by fire. The remains were demolished and a supermarket was built on the site. By 2018 it was a Lidl supermarket.
