Originally built as a chapel and later known as St. Lukes Church. The Royal Alhambra Palace was opened in 1864. It had a capacity (including standing spaces) for 4,000. In 1901 it was taken over by Thomas Barrasford and was renamed Hippodrome Theatre. Like all his variety theatres, it was equipped with a Barrasope projector to enable films to be screened as part of the variety programme. The Hippodrome Theatre was destroyed by German bombs in 1941 during World War II.
