When the Crossroads Cinemas opened June 20, 1980 it was considered one of the proudest theatres in the Valley. It was located near the food court in the upscale Crossroads Mall in Downtown Salt Lake City. The opening movie was The Village People in “Can’t Stop the Music”.

After 20 successful years the three screen fell on hard times, with declining attendence and in disrepair a Loews spokesman said it had too few screens to make worthwhile renovations. They did not renew the lease on the theatre. Also the compitition from three other nearby Loews Theatres and the new Century 16 gave Loew’s no incentive to continue to operate the theatre. Loews closed the theatre June 15, 2000.

It was so sad to see this mall come down, since I saw it being built. Someone needs to change the status to reflect that it’s been demolished. But I don’t know how to do that……

The intro on this theatres says it was a Loews, but Chucks photo 1983 says Plitt Crossroads, was it a Plitt and latter closed as a Loews as the header implies?
