1959’s “House on Haunted Hill” returns to nearly 500 theaters on October 28
CENTENNIAL, CO — It won’t be in “Emergo!,” but “House on Haunted Hill” starring Vincent Price will be back on the big screen for one night only on October 28 in 487 theaters nationwide. This will be a HD telecast presented by NCM Fathom Events, featuring Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (of Mystery Science 3000) who will give the film their notorious RiffTrax treatment. The telecast will be beamed live from the historic Belcourt Theater in Nashville (tape delayed in Paciic time zone).

San Francisco theater lecture tonight

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) silent film at Grand Theater with Jeff Barker at Console
EAST GREENVILLE, PA — On October 24th at 2pm the Grand Theater will showcase the 1920 silent version of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, starring Mr. John Barrymore, just in time for Halloween! The film will be accompanied by world-renowned organist Mr. Jeff Barker playing on the theater’s 1923 2/7 Marr and Colton organ. Tickets can be purchased in advance or prior to the show for $15.
This will be the third silent film screened at the 329-seat theater since it reopened after an extensive 11-month $¾ million dollar restoration in 2004-5. “Phantom of the Opera” was the first silent film featured on October 4th, 2009, on the Grand’s 85th anniversary. More recently showcased was “Steamboat Bill Jr” this past August.
The Grand Theater originally opened on October 4th, 1924. The organ now installed in the Grand is from the Rivoli Theater in Chicopee, MA. Instead of having an organ orginally, the Grand featured an in-house orchestra to accompany silent films until talkies first came to the theater in 1929. This of course was due to the co-founder of the Grand, Mr. Warren Fenstermacher being the conductor for the local East Greenville Orchestra!

Sing-along “Sound of Music” to play 498 theaters on October 19 & 26
CENTENNIAL, CO — In celebration of the forty-fifth anniversary of the original release of “The Sound of Music,” the film will be presented in almost five hundred theaters for two evenings in October in a high definition, digitally-restored version. The showings are being coordinated by NCM Fathom events and several other sponsors.
Presented by NCM Fathom, Rodgers & Hammerstein: An Imagem Company and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, in association with Sony Music Entertainment, Trapp Family Lodge, South Pacific Tour and Austrian Tourism, The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event will also include the exclusive “I’ll Sing Once More: The Sound of Music Today” featurette. Audiences will be whisked back to Salzburg for a travelogue where the classic was filmed, and be treated to contemporary and surprising tributes ranging from modern dance and rock band salutes to an all-marionette version.

AMC Theaters to present “Back to the Future” at two performances in October
KANSAS CITY, MO — The twenty-fifth anniversary of the original release of “Back to the Future” (which was spotlighted here on CT by Michael Coate in July) will be commemorated by the showing of the film in forty cities in AMC theaters. The screenings will take place Saturday, October 23 at 12:30 PM and Monday, October 25 at 7:00 PM. There is more information here and at the AMC website.

Columbia Theatre honors Oliver Hardy
HARLEM, GA — Oliver Hardy Day is celebrated the first weekend of October. Tens of Thousands attend from all over the world as the town closes the streets for crafts and parades in honor of Laurel and Hardy.
The Columbia Theatre, just recently renovated after a change in ownership, will be playing Laurel and Hardy movies all day Saturday October 2nd. Harlem is Oliver Hardy’s hometown. The one sheet frames have reproductions of some of the movies posted.

Holiday Theater historical program, Sunday 9/26
PARK FOREST, IL — The history of the Holiday Theater will be the program at the Park Forest Historical Society annual meeting on Sunday September 26, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in Park Forest Village Hall Board Meeting Board Meeting Room, 350 Victory Drive.
Jack and Becky Mallers Black will lead a panel discussion on the history of the Holiday Theater, Mrs. Black’s father, Bill Mallers, owned the theater from 1953 to 1978-9. Mr. ard Mrs. Black also worked at the theater. Also participating in the program will be Ann, Phillip and Chuck Mallers, Jim Kaufman—a former projectionist, and Jeff Lindstrom, who was an usher. Other former employees of any period of the theater are encouraged to attend.
The Holiday Theater opened in the Park Forest Shopping Center on October 28, 1950. It was one of the first movie theaters in the country to be in a shopping center. It was possibly the largest theater built in the Chicago metro area since the Depression, having over 1,000 seats and a soundproof “cry room” for parent with children.

Garden Theatre announces new season
WINTER GARDEN, FL — The Garden Theatre will kick off its 2010-11 live theatrical season October 15 through November 7 with “Noises Off”, produced by the Jester Theater Company. Other productions include “A Christmas Carol”, “Shhhh!”, and “Greater Tuna”. The season will conclude in April-May with the theatre’s second home produced show, “The Sound of Music”.
The Garden, truly a success story in small town theatre restoration and operation, is now governed by its own board, independent of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. The Foundation restored the theatre and then administered the house since its opening in 2008. Tremendous support is also given by the City of Winter Garden, and the theatre’s patrons. The Garden is also frequently booked for private events.
