One of the first movies to play here was “Everest”, which was one of the most popular IMAX movies of all time.

When I grew up, I never saw a movie in 70mm at this theater, since some of those movie were aimed at grown-ups. 70mm disappeared when the two screens were split and digital surround sound was installed. The first time I heard DTS was during a showing of the Jurassic Park sequel “The Lost World”, which I saw twice at this theater. During the second showing, the print was spliced somewhat (the previous showing was on a rainy day, and that was on opening weekend), but the sound quality was much better than the last time, in which there was stuttering. Back when Loews/Sony ran this theater, they used to advertise a lot for Sony Products and the Sony/IMAX theater, not to mention have Sony Playstation consoles for tryout.

One of my favorite experiences going to this theater was when I saw “Independence Day” the weekend it first came out. They didn’t show the “Star Wars” special edition trailer (which I saw at the Loews in Wayne with Jingle all the Way) but they showed a few other trailers as well as lots of filmed advertisements (alongside the slides) and then the feature presentation, which was great. Although the film was not mixed in 8-channel SDDS (it was a 5.1 mix, similiar to the Dolby Digital and DTS), it sounded great and the picture was good. After the movie was over, there were lines to go see the movie. After the Loews in Wayne expanded to 14 screens in 1997, I stopped going to this theater, and then Clifton Commons came.

are the imax showtimes up for this theater and the ROckaway? For Rockaway it’s not up yet…once the conversion is done by November 20 the system will be activated.

any word on when AMC will build a successor to this theater? Hopefully it will compete better against Manville and Hillsborough.

I saw an ad for the two-week engagement at this theater while I was another Clearview in Mansfield. Seems that Disney wants to get great per-screen averages from these big city engagements before expanding wide in December, which Disney has done with great success with other animated films. Too bad it won’t be in 3D and it will bomb since most moviegoers prefer CGI cartoons.

I don’t know….last time I saw a 3D movie was at the Clearview in Mansfield, where me and my dad snuck in the RealD glasses from showings of Journey to the Center of the Earth (which dad saw in Mansfield) and Nightmare before Xmas 3D (which I saw at Jersey Gardens with my cousin). The good thing is that any 3D glasses you get from the ticket tearer can be put into the RealD 3D bin. As for the IMAX 3D thing, will they have those goofy headsets that were used for non-digital IMAX 3D movies (i.e., Lincoln Square)? Having a small IMAX theater in a modestly large complex might be a mistake since moviegoers can go right across 287 to Palisades Center for a real IMAX experience (or wait until The Movie Experience opens Xanadu with real imax).

I went to a 4:40 showing of 2012. It was shown digitally, which was strange since the showtimes posted on movietickets.com didn’t say “digital presentation” save for a bunch of 3d movies and the Michael Jackson movie. As for the movie, the stadium seating portion of theater #3 was packed, leaving some moviegoers to fill some seats near the screen. Sound was good, not as loud as it was when DTS was installed before the digital projection was put into place. Picture quality was film-like, with sharpness in the titles and credits. Sound was clear, and the movie was ok with killer fx.

From July to September, attendance at AMC’s theaters were down compared to last year, according to news reports. How about this theater? I know that in August they got the 3-D system to boost sales…and this coming quarter an IMAX 3D digital system will go live one week from today…I hope “Avatar” spikes business at the box office or else prices will go up again.

Due to the popularity of the Twilight movie, more showtimes have been added, bringing the total to 8 (4 sold out, the other 4 available). Also, the first Twilight movie has an additional showtime, which is sold out, but there are two other showings. I already saw the first one on bluray and expect the sequel to do just as good…I heard from a friend of mine that the sequel is more dramatic and slow-paced than the first one, because she read the book. I plan on seeing “2012” this coming friday, whether or not it’s digital or not.

looks like another digital screen was added. “Michael Jackson’s This is It” and “Xmas Carol 3D” are playing on those screens.

nowadays you can buy it online to watch on the computer, rent it from netflix, and watch it on tcm whenever they show it. It is a movie classic that should not be remade.

According to AMC’s website, the price charge for IMAX shows are $4, a dollar more than the 3-D 4k showings. November 19 is when the IMAX system goes live. On the website, you can add friends who have moviewatcher accounts ala Facebook. I found around 75 or so people who go to the Rockaway theater on the website. Maybe AMC should make an app for Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter users so that fans can integrate AMC content into the site in order to function better.

sounds good. I wonder if they’ll share the same showtimes. Which auditorium at this theater will have the IMAX? Maybe screen #1…which has the most seats.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Nov 5, 2009 at 1:44 pm

This movie will do good since it’s been awhile since a kid’s movie in 3D has done boffo business (look at Meatballs 3D). Plus it will be the first digital IMAX 3D movie to play in the new auditorium, with Avatar soon to follow (finally a 3D movie for grownups and sci-fi geeks like me) and many more to come. As for seeing which version, I’ll save money and pay for the 4k 3D movie rather than the liemax screen, since tickets will be more expensive than the digital 3D experience. When I first heard about AMC getting an IMAX theater, I thought it was going to be a building extension with a real IMAX screen and plenty of seats. Turns out that AMC de-supersized the IMAX dream and will cut off some seats and draw the screen closer.

Seems that Xmas Carol 3D will be the first IMAX 3D feature to be shown at this theater (not to mention the two 3D screens showing the film). That might happen; if it doesn’t, then Avatar will be the next movie to debut in the new IMAX theater.

Read somewhere online that Xmas Carol 3D will be the first movie to be shown in digital IMAX this weekend, not to mention it being also in digital 3D and 2D. It will get the IMAX 3D first, with Rockaway and Paramus soon to follow.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Nov 5, 2009 at 1:36 pm

yes it’s coming. There’s a midnight showing, not to mention the Digital 3D version. Surprisingly, the new MJ movie didn’t play at this theater in IMAX…only the AMC 34th street theater showed it in digital IMAX. Will this theater still play “Polar Express” in Imax 3D in time for christmas? Probably not with the arrival of Avatar and the departure of Xmas Carol 3D.

I read online that some reviewers didn’t like Xmas Carol in 3D because of Jim Carrey. I’ve seen too many versions of the same story…the 1951 version and the 1984 TV movie are the best versions, not to mention the Mickey Mouse version. I’ll wait and save my 3D movie money ‘til Avatar.

Cloudy is back in 3-D, and also a digital 2D presentation of The Stepfather remake is also in the same auditorium. This weeknd: “Xmas Carol 3D”. I read a review online that says that this theater gets bad prints of major movies. I can see why, lots of scratches, splices, and blurry prints. Thankfully I go to Rockaway instead of this theater.
