Sounds like he’s way behind on taxes, among other legal problems he has. I’m sure if they haven’t already, the city is going to take the property.

The realtor no longer lists the property for sale either…

Major, my comments were directed at the last line in the introduction at the top of the page. The one that says a photo was taken before it was demolished.

The description in the intro sounds nothing like this theater. Next to the Quitman Bank, gothic architecture, three small windows, fancy stone facade…. My money says the building pictured is actually the Star like WillieP says in his post.

Maybe John Clark McCall needs to dig up that 1971 photo he took!

Was it demolished in the past couple of weeks then? At the NW corner of S. Culpepper and E. Johnson St.

Seems there are a number of conflicts as to which is the Star and which is the Ilex.

Thanks to the aerial shot, we can say it is not the site of a mobile home park. The park is to the North of the old drive-in. And they existed at the same time as well.

There looks to be a series of octo-plexes where the old drive was.

Address should be in the 1350 block of Junction Hwy. Next door to you guessed it, another Wal-Mart. But not on the old drive-in lot, but next to it. Between McDonalds and Culvers.

Addresses are good too. Looks to be around 1100 Quantico Ave.

Silicon Sam commented about Super Castle Drive-In on Jan 21, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Guess I need to retract parts of my comments. Looking at 1993 imagery on Google Earth, there was a larger drive-in on the SW corner of 224 and 60, East of Winter Rd. Less than ½ mile apart from the other drive-in. Yes, a Wal-Mart occupies the site.

The ad just posted pretty much confirms the location I pointed out on 8/24/09. 3 Miles West of New Castle on Hwy 224. There is a Wal-Mart SuperCenter a few blocks away, but not at the old drive-in property.

I would say the Franklin address is incorrect.

Google Earth still shows the Drive-In in 1992 imagery, but it’s one big graded lot in their 1998 imagery. The twin configuration was the lots side by side, the screens were in a side by side configuration, but angled slightly outward from each other. Concession looks to be between the 2 lots.

I was in San Antonio 1/20/2010 and heard on the radio the last of the concession stand will be demo'ed this week. Marquee will remain. Construction will start next week on a library.

Looks to be saved, and now they are leasing space.

Now called Lake Norman Creative Arts Center.

Silicon Sam commented about Rio Theater on Jan 12, 2010 at 1:55 am

I was just saying the Rio was between College and Washington St, in the 100 block, and you did not agree. You are saying it’s in the 200 block. That’s all…

But you are right, Oneida and N. Oneida at one point are 2 different streets. They actually merge together.

And it changes from one to the other completely as it goes North a few blocks to Wisconsin Ave. You’re right, very odd it would do that.

Silicon Sam commented about Rio Theater on Jan 11, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Makes no sense on the library parking lot since the library is at 225. N. Oneida, the parking lot is in the same 200 block (between Washington and E,. Franklin St.)

If the theater was indeed at 119, that would put it in between E. College and Washington. Greyhound is listed at 100 E. Washington.

1992 imagery shows it much clearer, but this should be it due south of downtown a block off Hwy 71. Near CR Rd 104 or 100. Both numbers are listed on the maps.

Silicon Sam commented about Dale Drive-In on Jan 10, 2010 at 8:11 pm

The map link above throws the location way off, (to 24th St; not Avenue) according to the print ad. Greensboro Ave is AKA 24th Ave., but I can’t find any mention of the Rosedale School mentioned in the ad. School has either been renamed, or demolished long ago. Anyone else know?

Dale Drive-In location seems to be all commercial buildings now, or the Sahama Village Cir. Somewhere near this intersection.

That would place it in the area of the Central Valley Plaza Shopping Center. Right around Clarion Inn and the Courtyard by Marriot.

None of the movies sites are showing any showtimes for Falls Cinema, so it’s likely they are shut down for now.

Concerning the June 2007 comment, how does a dropped film just explode? Were films really that volatile?

The marquee referenced in your picture belongs to the Manring Theater. It is now gone as of the middle 70’s.
