has anyone seen or even have any photos of the building interior? Would love to get some of the old shoots of the insides of the theatre itself.

First time to LA and I was able to catch the Nightmare before Christmas here in 3d totally awesome and the condition of the theatre is amazing, a virtual palace of Hollywoods yesteryear.

Some very fond memories from working the last two Sundance festivals here as the midnight manager ;–) Still remember talking to Alana Rickman and Chris Rock before some Q and A’s and geeking out slightly.

Weirdly enough I have never seen a movie here but have fond memories of shooting Don Mckellar’s a Word from the Management short in the auditorium along with seeing the Tragically Hip play a pretour show here to several hundred screeming fans. A beautiful restoration for sure. Do they still do the occasional film or is it all live perofrmance now?

I still remmeber being introduced to this venue during the 2002 Hot Docs fest and fell in love with it! Great old school rep house sheak with the curtain and one of the few movies houses still around in the city with a functioning balcony which is key for me. Still got to say one of the highlights was introducing someone to the Shinning for the first time there and watching Raiders and Last Crusade there February 2008 along with Dogma at the Kevin Smith fest.

Has anyone been able to see the new ETX system working as of yet? I have been wanting to see a screening with it for the past month and a half and unfortunately schedule hasnt worked and had already seen star trek by that point. But it is defintitely not the old school definition of Classic Movie Houses but in the modern contempoary definition in comparison to the Silvercities and the Parascotia, I would consider it to be a palace. I think it might even be better than the Varsity in some cases, both in presentation for projection and set up.

I just went here for the first time this past weekend for Superman (1978) and Clockwork Orange and just fell in love with the place! Perfectly restored, maintained with a great display of projectors in the corner and the quality of the open vault prints was pretty impressive. If it only wasnt the other side of town I go a lot more often!

I totally wish they would do something better withe the project other than more office towers/condos. And consdiering a lot of those new projects are currently stalled as well, provides enough time for somewhere better and more movie inclined to make a run for it. And besides, I still rememebr it being my first movie memory catching Return of the Jedi here sob

Yeah I have been hearing that rumbling too, they are just in the process of building another drop off/pu right behind the venue so there is finalyl some rumblings of activity. So tragic ;–(

This was and probably still is my favorite theatre in the GTA~! First introduction to it was the great White Squall followed closely by the Toronto Premiere of ST First Contact. When I started working front of house for the Toronto Film Fest, before and after my shift, this was the place to be for films like School of Rock, Barbarian Invasions, Haute Tension and so many others. The Uptown 1 with the thx rumble. How I miss thee.

True, ah well, any highlights in terms of films seen there for you?

Yeah it was devastating, from the early 90’s until late 2000 this was where I caught a lot of my movies going through film school ;–( the fact that Cineplex was putting money into renovating the complex almost right up to the end was admirable and unfortunately became a victem soley of the stadium seating craze of most venues not for the best sightlines. Queensway might be the better/newer infrastructure, but the presentation and memories at Sherway which much more memorable.

It is totally unfortunate since we are now 11 years past the closing of the theatre and no one has attempted to rejuvinate the lands and the theatre which would have been brilliant. Especially for the marquee. Anyone living in the area in the 80’s and early 90’s went here to see movies growing up (managed to see the whole disney catalogue here from 80-94 upon theatrical release along with Batman (Returns), Lethal Weapon 3 and the Rock. I understand Famous building newer infrastructure but would have been great to see either Rainbow reopen with slight renovations or AMC by the land and site and build a completely new venue with the original sign and features refurbed.

I still remember going here a lot in mine teens with the highlights being Forrest Gump/Lion King in the summer of ‘94, Unforgiven being my first Eastwood western and ST Generations. It is cool to see the structure still there albeit it is weird that it is a restuarant now. Kind of weird location……
