Woody Allen always does well in NYC and LA and a few of the cities in between. He always has been a bit of a niche market director. He has had his hits and more than his share of flops. The fact that he married his companion;s adopted daughter is so old news.
‘Blue Jasmine’ averaged in excess of $100,000 per theater in it’s opening weekend. It is set to go wider in NYC this Friday including 3 screens at the Chelsea Cinemas. And is already be mentioned for Oscar nominations.
Yes this is one of the usual venues for new Woody Allen films along with the Angelika. And there are 4 venues the new BAM Harvey is is showing “Blue Jasmine” as well starting Friday in Brooklyn. I think I will make the trek over there and check out their new set-up.
It actually closed a couple of weeks ago. Cinemas are becoming slim pickings on the East Side.
One would think the Eastside would be a good location for an ArcLight .
The movie palace is making a return to Brooklyn this summer. The Harvey Theater at the Brooklyn Academy of Music will be home to the Steinberg Screen, a 35-foot-by-19-foot digital projection screen, with 42 accompanying surround-sound speakers. That will make the theater, a centerpiece of live productions and concerts, the largest cinema in Brooklyn able to show both 3-D and conventional films, according to BAM officials, who are to announce the new installation on Thursday.
“It’s going to be huge, because it’s going to fill the proscenium of the Harvey,” Karen Brooks Hopkins, the president of BAM, said. “You’re in a spectacular atmospheric theater, that will now have this giant screen and will be this spectacular atmospheric movie theater. It hearkens back to the great movie palaces of yesteryear, but it will be completely state-of-the-art.”
The screen and accompanying equipment were the gift of Joseph and Diane Steinberg, Brooklyn philanthropists and cinephiles. It will give the theater the ability to show 3-D movies, as well as multimedia works and films with live soundtracks. (The Harvey will continue to showcase theater and other performances; the screen is storable under the stage.) It will also give BAM, whose Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek already draw 200,000 people a year, the opportunity to screen bigger films in the summer, when the 834-seat Harvey is usually dark. “We hope to show big Hollywood films in August,” Ms. Brooks Hopkins said.
The Steinberg Screen will open to the public on June 19 for the BAMcinemaFest. Coming programming includes a “Big Screen Epics” series including “2001: A Space Odyssey,” Doctor Zhivago” and “The Godfather.”
Saturday afternoon went to see ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ on the IMAX screen. It was a wonderful experience. Loved the reserved seats. I purchased my tickets a few days in advance and was able to get my favorite seats in the theater. I prefer sitting in row M which is the back row where my line of site is about half way up the screen. I have to say 70mmIMAX is way ahead of the current D-IMAX. I am glad that AMC seems to be keeping this a 70mm film theater. I did notice that AMC is selling all the tickets for a 3D presentation where Loews used to hold back the 4 seats on the left and right sides of the theater. If you notice those seats are a different color.
Regal is opening a new 12 screen theater down the road at the Nanuet Mall. It would make sense for Regal to take over this theater and decrease the number of screens.
Saw ‘Life of Pi’ at the 12:30 PM show at the Ziegfeld on Friday. Less than 100 people were there. The presentation was excellent as I always have experienced there.
If the sound of the trailer for ‘Les Miserables’ is any indication how the film will sound at the Ziegfeld it will be very impressive. Great bass that you could almost feel, especially the sound of the waves.
It is too bad the owners could not make a go of this theater and now it will no longer be a theater. That area of Orange County NY is severely under seated.
Saw ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ on the “Dreamland” screen. This is the original front of the house theater. This theater also has a balcony. DLP conversion was completed for the opening of ‘Brave’. All 3 screen are now digital but no 3D.
It would be nice to see Disney take over operation. That is the only way that the Ziegfeld would be able to obtain exclusive Manhattan engagements of films like the El Capitan does.
I certainly hope the Chelsea is with us for a while. This is my theater of choice being that it is my “neighborhood” theater. I avoid the theaters on 42nd Street and the 34 St AMC. They attract the bridge and tunnel crowd. The Lincoln Square and the Union Square theaters are always way too crowded. The Chelsea is a comfortable place to see a film and the cliental tend to treat attending a movie here seriously. No talking, no use of cell phones.
The theater is not totally dark for the next couple of weeks. There are the MET operas and Memphis for 4 showings as well as a couple of premiers.

They are just doing the booking. The theater is still owned by the parent company of Clearview Cinemas.

Snow White and the Huntsman is the next film booked for June 1st.
The Chelsea 9 would be perfect for Sundance to take over.

You are on the wrong theater. This is the Flagship Cinema in Watervive. Flagship Cinemas is a chain with about a dozen theaters.
