In 1930 E.H. James purchased a disused Chapel in Watling Street and after renovation work opened it as the Electric Cinema, Showing one show per night with matinees on Mondays and three shows on Saturdays at prices of 5d to 1/3d. There were two changes of programme per week and sound was provided by a Uniquaphone sound system. The proscenium was 20feet wide and the venue could seat 250 patrons.

The venue lasted until 1938 when James had the Luxor Cinema purpose built nearby with 501 seats. The Electric Cinema lay empty for some time before being demolished.
