Southern Theatre, Oak Park, IL

The Southern Theatre opened in 1912, at the time the second largest theater in Oak Park, after the legitimate Warrington Opera House, until a year later, when the 800-plus seat Oak Park Theatre opened (later renamed the Lamar Theatre).

The Southern Theatre closed in the 1970’s, and was afterwards converted to retail use, as it remained until at least 2003. It was demolished in spring of 2010.

As noted in the local papers, this structure has been sold by the city of Oak Park and will be demolished for parking.

The Southern Theatre has been demolished. Here are a couple of my pictures of the Southern (from 2007 and 2010):

This theater stopped showing movies way before the 70’s. It was subsequently a drug store until abandonment and demolition.
