Chester Picturehouse

Situated in the heart of the city, Chester Northgate is a new shopping and leisure destination, comprising a market hall, cafés, bars and restaurants, a co-working office space, a new public square and an 800 space, multi-storey car park, all intended to revitalise the city centre.

There is also a Chester Picturehouse. While the rest of the development opened towards the end of 2022, the cinema was initially delayed due to parent company Cineworld’s financial situation. Then, when the fit-out started, in summer 2023, the company sought permission to make some alterations, including removing a kiosk on the ground floor, “re-shaping” the first floor café/bar and making changes to the concessions area and toilets on the second floor. This pushed the opening back from the autumn to Friday 10 November 2023.

The cinema features interiors influenced by the pastels and 20th-century design of Wes Anderson’s iconic film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and an original mural by award-winning multi-disciplinary artist Murugiah.

Seating capacities are: Screen 1:218, Screen 2:136, Screen 3:142, Screen 4:107, Screen 5:95 and Screen 6:48.

The opening films were teenage drama “How to Have Sex”, super-hero epic “The Marvels”, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, teen sex comedy “Bottoms”, “Dream Scenario”, starring Nicolas Cage, courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall”, romantic drama “Past Lives” and action adventure “The Killer”.
