Plans for Ridgefield Playhouse take shape
RIDGEFIELD, CT — The soon to be new owner of the Ridgefield Playhouse, Valerie Jensen, has been submitting her proposal to the zoning board for rebuilding the theatre with three screens. Jensen said the new multi-functional space could be ready in 18 months.

Alamo Drafthouse moving into vacant Metro Theater
NEW YORK, NY — All New York is buzzing about the arrival of Alamo Drafthouse as they plan to reopen the Metro Theater next year. The five screen theater had already been gutted to prepare it for retail use so this Alamo will be built from scratch.

Blink Fitness signs 19,200 SF lease at former Jamaica movie theater
JAMAICA, NY — The former Merrick Theater is becoming the next location of Blink Fitness. Its 2,500 seat capacity will now be utilized by almost 20,000 feet of gym space across two floors, when it opens this fall.

Old movie theater restored into new, modern church
SHAWNEE, KS — An abandoned cinema has proved to be the ground for a new progressive chruch. The former Trailrdige Cinema is new What if the Church and the $200,000 in renovations have now helped them to utilize the theatre’s features as part of the religious experience they’re promoting.

A new lease on life for a rundown Tel Aviv cinema
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — The historic Hamerkaz Cinema could have new life as residences. After opening in 1956, the theatre spent most of its years screening adult films. The gutted interior could be converted into living spaces and still maintain some of the original features that are still left on the facade.

Stuart Street theater getting major remake
BOSTON, MA — The Stuart Street Playhouse will reopen as Theatre 1, an upscale screening room and event space. There will be plush seats that double as workstations which they hope will open doors to loads of entertainment possibilities.

Tax credit to speed Senator Theatre renovations
BALTIMORE, MD — A Sustainable Communities Tax Credit is going to bring some improvements to the Senator Theatre. Additional screens and a restaurant are what’s in store and it should all be done by the holidays. Hopefully, the new features can solidify a future for this oft-troubled palace.

Former theater seen as a centerpiece for Baltimore arts district
BALTIMORE, MD — The Centre Theatre hasn’t operated as a theater in over 50 years. Thanks to a developer along with financial assistance from the Maryland Institute of Art, it will rise again as the cornerstone of a redeveloped Station North neighborhood. They plan to use it for concerts, workshops, film and more.

Waldorf movie theater to get $4.5 million facelift
WALDORF, MD — The Saint Charles Towne Center 9 is getting a major renovation. Instead of closing the theatre, like it’s done with so many recently, AMC is investing in this new property with new projection, sound and seats. There may even be an IMAX in its future. They expect the work to be done by summer.

Hyde Park theater reopening now scheduled for fall
CHICAGO, IL — After reporting almost a year ago that the Hyde Park Theaters would reopen, Chicagoist has some new information. They’re now targeting fall for the reopening, three years short of its centennial, and plan to have a variety of new releases as well as a restaurant.
