Chicagoans hedge bets on ArcLight
CHICAGO, IL — With the announcement earlier this year of ArcLight’s first Chicago venue, locals are discussing how it might pan out. The success of the venture and the new complex it will be a part of, is anybody’s guess. It could however become extremely successful and take major business away from competitors such as the AMC River East.
How do you think ArcLight will be integrated into the Chicago moviegoing scene?

Movie theater matrons gone from NY
Well, actually they’ve been gone for a while. But Newsday reported that with the elimination of a provision on how they are hired, they are now truly gone for good.
What responsibilities could they have in today’s theaters in order to be effective?

Fire guts apartment building adjacent to the Pix Theatre
LAPEER, MI — A fire on November 12 gutted a century-old apartment building in historic downtown Lapeer adjacent to the Pix Theatre. Despite early reports that the fire spread to the landmark theater, it did not spread there but the theater had smoke and water damage. The theater’s Facebook page mentioned the damage led to the cancellation of an event the following day but it will be rescheduled.

Work continues to create a one-screen movie theater
DOWAGIAC, MI — Think single-screen theaters are on their way out? Don’t tell that to the city of Dowagiac because they’re in the process of building a new one. While a second screen may be added later, they’re currently tirelessly working to build a single auditorium into a former men’s clothing store.

Northwest Chicago Film Society is moving again
CHICAGO, IL — First they had to leave the Portage and now the Patio as the Northwest Film Society has had to move to the Gene Siskel Film Center. AC/Heating issues at the Patio were the cause of the move but they’re already in the process of being resolved. They hope to return there next season.

100-year-old movie theater back in business
BENHAM, KY — The Coal Miners Memorial Theater showed movies again the other week for Halloween. Locals reminisced about the old days of their favorite cinema and relished the opportunity to watch a film in it again. More screenings are planned for next month.

Champaign Art Theater celebrates 100 years
CHAMPAIGN, IL — The Art Theatre turns 100 today and they’re staging a variety of events to celebrate including a screening of a new documentary about the theatre and a chamber music ensemble performance. A story in the Daily Illini discusses how it’s managed to survive all these years with stints as an adult movie house and now as a successful co-op.

Wyoming’s last drive-in movie theater
POWELL, WY — The Las Vegas Sun posted a piece on the American Drive-In and its loyal owner. Despite the risks, she invested in a digital projector and still only plays family fare to a loyal local audience.

Ramsey Cinema reaches Kickstarter goal
RAMSEY, NJ — The entire area came together to save the Ramsey Cinema and raise $125,000 for digital projectors. A reward system proved to be a key motivator and confirming donations with gifts from free tickets to auditorium naming rights.
