    District theater boom on the rise

    WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. is in the midst of the a theater boom with various projects in the works in addition to their almost 50 existing screens. They’re comparing it to the building boom of 100 years ago with the culmination being the opening of the new Landmark theatre opening next year in Northwest.

    2 theaters face digital transition

    EMERALD ISLE, NC & SCRANTON, PA — The Emerald Plantation Cinema recently made the switch to digital and continues improvements around the theatre. The Marquee Cinemas though seems to be less concerned about its future. They haven’t jumped to digital yet and haven’t announced plans. With the lease set to run out this year, no one knows what will become of the space.

    Movie theater shooting in FL

    WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — A movie theater was the site of another unfortunate incident yesterday when a retired cop opened fire on a couple at the Cobb Grove 16. A man has already been pronounced dead and the theatre is currently closed. The altercation arose from a disagreement over texting.

    World Exchange Plaza theatre closes its doors

    OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA — The last downtown multiplex closed its doors last weekend when the former Empire Theatres ceased business. Landmark had purchased the lease a few months ago but can’t reach an agreement with the property manager. If a new operator isn’t found soon, the future of the building will be in question.

    Cinema transitions in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay region in 2013

    SAGINAW, MI — Looking back at 2013, several theaters in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay region had a year full of transitions.

    In Vassar, the 76-year-old Vassar Theatre had a close call. Unable to afford a digital projector on its own, it had a successful Kickstarter campaign which surpassed its goal allowing it to survive.

    But in Midland, the Studio M closed in December, unable to afford digital projectors for its screens and suffering declining business.

    Ritz celebrates 75 years

    MALVERN, AR — The Ritz turned 75 last month and thankfully plan on many more. They hosted a successful 1930’s-style evening to honor the anniversary where many patrons showed up in period dress.

    Gateway Film Center named Columbus' best

    COLUMBUS, OH — Columbus Underground has named the Gateway Film Center its top theatre for 2013. The OSU favorite screens a wide variety of films and has a new restaurant opening next year as well.
