The decisions made at this hearing will chance the course of this project. We cannot express how important is that everyone who supports preservation of the Raymond Theatre attend this hearing.

Boston’s Gaiety Theatre May Become Condos
BOSTON, MA — The Gaiety Theatre, nearly abandoned for 20 years, is now threatened with the wrecking ball. According to this report from the National Trust, a developer is close to obtaining a demolition permit from the city of Boston.
Preservationists have appealed to the Boston Landmarks Commission, but the group recently chose not to grant the Gaiety landmark status. “The Boston Landmarks Commission stated that while the building deserves to be preserved, it doesn’t meet the standards for landmark designation,” says Ellen Lipsey, the commission’s executive director.
The Friends of the Gaiety, which is spearheading efforts to the save theater, plans to appeal the landmark decision and ask the state’s historical commission to intervene. “We are determined to protect this theater,” says Stephen Landrigan, one of the group’s members.

Port Theatre Loses Decision
PORT ST. JOE, FL — The Port Theatre lost a first round in a battle tonite. A neighboring property owner is applying for the right to build a second story (most of which already existed, though pirated in the 1970’s). At Monday night’s meeting, it was decided to approve the plans of the current owners of the building adjacent to the theater.

One Theater’s Experience with the National Register of Historic Places
PORT ST. JOE, FL — Recently, I clearly saw the value of Historic Registry status for our Port Theatre.
The process of application for National Historic Registry nomination is not a quick process. It could take 2 to 3 years to get through successfully. One needs to persevere and not get discouraged because in the long run it helps preserve one more theater, one more treasure.
Contacting your state’s historic department is probably the best first step in the process. You may also want to visit the National Register of Historic Places website.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The historic Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, a local entertainment fixture since 1914, will be celebrating its birthday in style this year.
May 11 marks the theater’s 90th anniversary, and in honor of the occasion, the picture palace will host a special presentation of John Ford’s classic film “The Grapes of Wrath”, along with selected vintage short subjects.

Loew’s to Become a Foot Locker?
MONTREAL, CANADA — I passed by the Loew’s (Club Med World) and a contractor’s sign is on the front of theatre reads that Foot Locker will move in. The “space for lease” sign still remains, therefore I think this theater will split up soon.

Oriental to Host Last “Silents Please” Showing
MILWAUKEE, WI — This Saturday, the Oriental Theatre will hold the last of their Silents Please showings of a silent film for this season (and who knows if they will come again?)
So, if you have not booked plans for 1pm this Saturday, May 8th, why not ready yourself for an unusual title: “The Italian Straw Hat” starring Rene Clair. This 1927 opus is described as: “A young man on the way to his wedding watches helplessly while his horse eats a lady’s hat.” It sounds like a one-joke play, but it is called ‘funny and elegant.’
But as with all the ‘Silents Please’ monthly series, even if the film is not a classic, there is always the melodious and mellifluous tones of the giant Kimball Theatre Pipe Organ to enthrall your ears.
