I sure hope so. Too bad they couldn’t add more screens. That would be great at this location considering all the screens that used to be in the area.

I agree…miss this place a lot. I preferred the large, open lobby here than at the Queensway cinemas that replaced this. Also the convenience to Sherway Gardens across the street was great. This would have made a terrific discount house and who knows, it might still be there. Too bad Rainbow didn’t get a crack at this since all their other local cinemas are former Cineplex Odeons.

Sounds interesting. Tried to find the article on their web site, however only the current edition comes up.

Terrific! Can’t wait! Never thought it should have closed in the first place.

A real shame this theatre was lost. I was in it only twice after it had been triplexed, but still found the lobby and cinema 1 quite lovely. Very reminiscent of the main floor of the Runnymede which is now a quite successful Chapters bookstore. I have always thought in this neighbourhood in Greektown, it would have made a great banquet hall/event theatre which would have kept the ambiance of the theatre. Another lost treasure as far as I’m concerned.

Do you think this place will ever re-open? It’s been in the works for so long now since being announced last August. Just wondering.

telliott commented about Nortown Theatre on Feb 13, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Jon, I remember that so well that sometimes the Nortown was in the 20th Century ads or most of the time the Famous Players ads. I also remember that 20th Century usually changed films on Wednesdays, Odeon on Thursdays and Famous Players and Loews on Fridays. Ahhh those were the days. Do you remember when the 2 companies (Famous Players and 20th Century) more or less merged? After that they were all in the Famous Players ads.

Loved the Nortown! Saw many a Disney film there when I was a child. It also had a lot of roadshow reserved seat move overs from the University. Too bad it was closed so early, could have gone on for years.

telliott commented about Danforth Music Hall Theatre on Jan 23, 2011 at 3:55 pm

What IS it about this area that can’t support this venue as either a movie theatre or live performance venue!?? It’s a very popular part of town, Greektown/Riverdale and once had this one, then known as the Century, the Palace (which was turned in to 3 by Famous Players in ‘82, and only lasted 5 yrs) and the Odeon Danforth. This Music Hall was even part of the very successful Festival chain for a few years and even THAT didn’t work! Don’t people in this area go to the movies or concerts?? I just don’t get it about this place. The Kingsway, Revue, Royal came back..the Fox never left and the Humber is coming back. WHY not here??!!

telliott commented about Famous Players Station Square Cinemas on Jan 23, 2011 at 10:56 am

Yes there was also a Cineplex Odeon Station Square at the same time, so that must be the one in cinematour. It closed and the FP one still survives.

telliott commented about Westwood Theatre on Jan 22, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I remember reading in my local newspaper that it will probably be torn down this spring, so we shall see. Imagine all the movies that could have played there these last 12 years! Such a shame. The Kingsway is back open, the Humber is re-opening, I’m sure the Westwood could have worked too.

telliott commented about Uptown Theatre on Jan 1, 2011 at 4:51 pm

TIFF had nothing to do with the Uptown. It was owned and operated by Famous Players and they were the ones that refused to spend the cash. It was just one of the many cinemas used by TIFF for the festival. Thanks for the Canucks insults.

I can’t believe that there is not ONE movie theatre in loop today either. It’s great that the Goodman, Oriental and Palace are drawing them in, but I guess the Loop area is too office oriented now to have movie theatres. Too bad the one in the Block 37 development didn’t make it. I also can’t believe that the magnificent Esquire and McClurg Court are STILL sitting there empty after all these years, especially in a city like Chicago.

There’s a whole list of Cineplex and Famous Players theatres being updated today, but what information is being updated? Everything looks the same to me and there are no new comments.

telliott commented about Famous Players Chatham Cinemas 6 on Jul 17, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Thanks Im Not Famous….just read the news and all the comments. It seems that the Chatham Six cinemas are not very well regarded by people in Chatham and many go to Windsor or London to see movies. Anyway, says the big box development was approved in April so it will be interesting to see what happens. Some people who wrote comments think that when the new 6 screen theatre opens, no one will want to go to the old out dated, uncomfortable current Cinemas 6. I wonder why if they are building a brand new cinema, they wouldn’t increase the number of screens to say 8. Oh well, at least sounds like they are getting something new.

telliott commented about Famous Players Chatham Cinemas 6 on Jul 17, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I find it interesting that Cineplex would take over this theatre when they recently and quietly closed the Fairway Centre 7 in Kitchener because it doesn’t fit in with their current types of theatres, with stadium seating, curved screens, enhanced sound and all the bells and whistles. You would think that the Chatham 6 would also fall under the same category as Fairway Centre. And why are they still branding theatres with the Famous Players brand after all these years? You would think they would finally retire that brand and just use Cineplex Odeon for all of their “traditional” theatres.

telliott commented about Famous Players Chatham Cinemas 6 on Jul 17, 2010 at 12:13 am

I tried looking this up on the Cineplex website and it said the city that I had entered was not found. So is this open? or closed? It HAS gone from the Stinson website, so obviously it’s not them anymore. Stinson has lost several theatres in the last few years, namely the Imperial 8 in Barrie, the Collingwood 4 and Orillia 4 and now the Chatham 6. The only one left now other than a couple of drive-ins is the Timmins 6.

Any idea which building it is when you look at the Google satellite image? Usually they have these buildings marked, but I can’t tell which is the theatre.

The Carlton cinemas will be re-opening on July 2nd and run by Magic Lantern Theatres. They have already included it on their website.

telliott commented about Beverly Center Cinemas Closing Tonight on Jun 3, 2010 at 7:55 pm

John, the Carlton cinemas are scheduled to re-open this summer by Magic Lantern theatres (also owns Rainbow Cinemas). If you look on the Magic Lantern/Rainbow website, they now have the Carlton listed there under Magic Lantern. Says opening summer 2010. Should have all new decor and new seats and probably new sound systems. I look forward to the re-opening as I’m sure many others will too. There was so much press about it closing back in December, I’m sure that helped Magin Lantern make a decision to take it over.

If Rave put all of that work in the the theatre and there were a lot of great plans for it, then why did they give it up so soon after taking it over? Sounds like the Carlton cinemas here in Toronto, there obviously was a following for the Beverly Centre, too bad it couldn’t have stayed with Rave for years to come.
