Majestic Theatre cameo
posted by Philbert Gray at 7:40am

RENO, NV — “The Captive City” - a 1952 crime drama took place in the fictional city of Kennington. The actual location of the shooting was Reno, Nevada.

Towards the beginning of the film John Forsythe parks his car on a downtown street. While he is standing on the sidewalk, there is a prominent shot of Reno’s now demolished Majestic Theatre in the background.

The film will be shown on TCM cable channel Oct. 2, 2008. The film has also recently been shown on the MGMHD movie channel for those of you with Dish TV.

New Pink Panther promo
posted by Simon Overton at 7:45am

Once again, which historic theater is used for the recently made, pre-show request to TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES -presently running in most Regal cinemas?

I am referring to a clip comedian Steve Martin’s arrival at a typical old Fox Theatre with a “Scouracized” box office and Terrazzo outer lobby. It’s also an interesting way to plug the latest “Pink Panther” flick. I hope THIS one will be funny!

Is it the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA?

Can anyone identify the closed theater that used to appear briefly in the opening credits montage for “Law and Order SVU?”

Nuart in Primetime TV
posted by Justin Fencsak at 7:55am

The Nuart Theatre was shown during Mondays’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS. In this episode, two of the main characters go out to see a Planet of the Apes marathon at the Nuart, very simliar to what is happening right now over at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

The only catch is that the drinks have the AMC logo rather than the Landmark insignia on them. It’s a shame that the show’s creators changed the branding just to avoid lawsuits and such.

Capitol Theatre makes cameo in "Semi-Pro"
posted by Gary Flinn at 7:35am

FLINT, MI — The new film Semi-Pro includes scenes filmed at the Capitol Theatre, as initially reported last May. The scenes include one of the theater’s front facade indicating that the movie Mother, Jugs and Speed is showing and a scene involving Will Ferrell, playing Flint Tropics owner Jackie Moon, in a dumpster alongside the alley side of the theater talking to Woody Harrelson playing Monix, one of the players on his team. Scenes involving the theater showing a closed circuit telecast of the Mega Bowl did not make the final cut on the film, but it could appear in a future DVD release of the film.

More information can be found in the Flint Journal.

Theaters in movies
posted by Simon Overton at 7:35am

If you feel like five minutes plus of L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre; facade, lobby, auditorium and the glorious stage.

It’s pure nostalgia... so go to the movies NOW and see “Alvin & the Chipmunks.”

Capitol cameo update
posted by Michael Zoldessy at 5:47am

FLINT, MI — The Capitol Theatre marquee is now fully functioning and now every light bulb lights and moves--even the light bulbs under the marquee. The message on the marquee reads “MEGA BOWL ON CLOSED-CIRCUIT TV”.  The Mega Bowl is the championship game in the film “Semi-Pro” about an American Basketball Association basketball team called the Flint Michigan Tropics.

The theater entrance and rest of the theater building are also getting spruced up. The storefronts are getting vintage signs installed. Many of the signs are borrowed from Bob Perani’s collection from his Dort Mall. The film is scheduled to be released on February 29, 2008.

A news report (including video) from WJRT reports that the filming of scenes for “Semi-Pro” will take place at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and 3.  Because the Capitol Theatre building is across Harrison Street from the Mass Transportation Authority transporation center, bus boarding and transfer locations will be moved to alternate locations for the duration of the film shoot.

Capitol marquee makes cameo
posted by Michael Zoldessy at 5:00am

FLINT, MI — The long neglected 1940’s vintage marquee of the Capitol Theatre, built in 1927 and designed by John Eberson, is getting a $20,000 makeover for a movie cameo in the film “Semi-Pro ”. A crew from the local firm Signs by Crannie is replacing lights and wiring as well as installing a new blinking mechanism.

While the marquee and blade sign received new neon in 2004/2005, no additional work was done on the marquee until now. The blade sign got a new paint job in the 2004/2005 makeover.  According to Troy Farah, whose family owns the theater building, the marquee hadn’t fully functioned since the early 1980’s at the latest.
