Muray
Can you tell me what the interior was like and what kind of a run were they on? Do you know when the theatre was converted to a bowling alley. It had to be late 50’s or very early 60’s. I guess later on they had air conditioning or they would not have even stayed open into the 50’s.

This has to be one of the youngest and largest plex’s to close

The ad for From Here to Eternity blows me away the doors opened at 7am and the first show was at 730 to accomidate the overflow crowds. Those were truely ther glory days.

I was only in this theatre one time to see a midnight showing of “Mothers Day”.

Chelly also owned The Eros besides a few others that I cant recall the names of in the same area. I worked for someone a long time ago who was partners with her in some of these places. I worked on the legitimate end managing a few double bill neighborhood houses that gave the company a respectable front. I have not seen anyone mention The Metropolitan porno house that used to be on 14th Street. I never was inside but have enough stories about that place that would make us realize why the 70’s was the most sordid decade ever.

Are you sure your not thinking of the Wagner?

I was the one who mentioned Tentacles and Squirm at The RKO madison. I think though that this may have been after RKO dropped the theatre and it reopened for a short time as an “indie”.

This is another example of NY theatres not being respected. This is one of the most degrading things to ever happen at The Music Hall. Anyways how can basketball be played on a stage?

California is the only place these great films are shown in 70mm or at all. Remember the Zeigfeld is booked no better then any suburban UA on Long Island.

Under the list of Roadshows they list Airport, but this was really a moveover from the Warner Cinerama. Was it really roadshow even at the Warner? Also Didnt Mary Poppins play roadshow except in New York where it opeded at the Music Hall?

At least they maintained The Rivoli to the end except for hacking the exterior to prevent it from getting landmark status and booking grind films in this once proud house.

William, although not as glorious a house as The Egyptian UA outdid themselves the last few months running The Movies at Bayside. Not only was no maintenance done they did not clean the bathrooms, mop the floors and barely picked up any trash from the floors. This is a sin because the thatre sits in a nice part of town.

UA’s maintenance of all their theatres is always north of non-existernt. Then they wonder why people stop coming and the theatres close.

The building behind Best Way was looked at by a few chains for a theatre but the rent and lease situation was more then a theatre could justify.

Two comments about your post Warren. I noticed it odd in the second marquee photo from 1955 its says The State and not Loews. Was Fox west coast now the owner? Also why did the Capitol not have the Loews name on it until later on? I would think they would be proud of one of New Yorks great palaces.

RobertR commented about UA Sheepshead Bay Stadium 14 on May 17, 2004 at 10:25 am

This theatre is a friggin mess. They dont even have a sign on the outside, it looks like a factory. It’s a sad statement on the people of Brooklyn that they would stop attending some of the smaller well kept theatres showing the same films causing them to close. Not only is the theatres themselves just average, they are not kept clean and the audience runs from one screen to the other. On the weekends the Belt Parkway backs up to get off the theatres exit. You would think they were going to The Zeigfeld or Beekman for a real movie experience and not a Brooklyn plex. If anyone is curious why the Midway is operated so well, UA is partners with Heskel Real Estate group who are in the theatre constantly making sure it is run properly. Thats the only chance for the Marboro when it reopens, but I think Regal is going that one alone, so god only knows.

Wow I did not know that the Madison played rock and roll shows. My mom saw (I think) Connie Stevens and Troy Donahue make a promtional tour stop at the Ridgewood in the 60’s.

What a great marquee and even that late in the game all the lights lit and it looks well kept. The exterior looks like a poor mans version of The Rivoli.

That is The Brandon, originally a Walter Reade arthouse. Continental 3 which had 70mm was run into the ground by UA after less thern 10 years and closed. It now has retail.

RobertR commented about Elmwood Theatre on May 14, 2004 at 11:44 am

When Loews bought the Elmwood from Interboro it was still a huge single. The twinning was done around the time of Blue Lagoon. It also was a triplex for awhile If I remember right. I think they split the downstairs in half and left upstairs alone for awhile. The problem was Interboro had long ago painted the whole interior royal blue totally covering up any gilding or ornateness.
