Hey Nick
The theater opene in 1984. One of the opening attractions was 2010 shown in the large theater in 70MM. The large theater and the one to it’s right had masking and curtains which was not common for GCC. The other 4 theaters had masking that came down instead of across. In the middle 80’s it was a very popular theater for GCC.

Thanks Nick for another great update on Tampa area theaters. I remember these theaters well. I do rememeber seeingo ne film in the new 3&4 section after Cobb took it over. It was Dead MAn Walking. I remember not liking it because the screen had no masking and I could not tell if the film was done in scope or flat. I never went back after that.

Mikeoaklandpark commented about Studio Movie Grill at 69th Street on May 13, 2010 at 10:55 am

Growing up as a child there were 3 theaters in 69th st. The Tower, The Terminal and The 69th st. The Terminal and 69th St were Stanley Warner Theaters. The Tower was a William Goldman Theater. Evetually the Tower was sold to Ellis theaters. The 69th street closed in 1965 and had a brief reopening in 1982 as RAM 69th st. Due to handicap restrcitons the thetaer didn’t last. The Terminal was closed in the 90’s when they remodeled the bus terminal. It was run by the Sameric chain from the late 60’s until it’s closing.

I lived in Tamps from 1983-1996 and it is sad to think that all that is left of all those great theaters that eventuallu opened is AMC megaplexes. UGH

Mikeoaklandpark commented about Theaters in Tampa for lease? on May 7, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Thanks Nick. I was wondering what happened to mostof these theaters. If you look at the Main Street 5 posting it showed the theater was intact and used as a halloween stoe in the lobby. I also know Rehal opened a 20 screen theater near Van Dyke with 20 screens which was inoperation only a few years and clsoed when Regal went into bankruptcy. I also just thought about Northdale Court. Any idea about that theater?

There are 2 empty theater that I am aware of in Tampa. The former AMC Varsity 6 and the Carmike Main Street 5. There are 2 other AMC theaters that I am not sure what has happened to them. AMC Twin BAy 4 in South TAmpa and AMC Horizon Park 4. There was also the UA Movies at Misson Bell. Please let me know if this works out for you.

It willprobibly be another way to rip us off for extra buck just like the 3-D

Mikeoaklandpark commented about Price increases for 3-D movies in effect today on Mar 30, 2010 at 10:48 am

The new craze of 3-D really stinks. So far I have seen Avitar and Alicce In Wonderland in 3-d and neither were anything worth paying the extra money for. The 3-D that I remember as a kid was true 3-d where thigns came out to you right in your face. I say dump this 3-D craze and bring back the good old 70mm films. If 3-D is back maybe one day 70 MM will be too.

Actually the last film to play before renovations was Doctor You’ve Got To Be Kiddiung. They reopened wityh a film in 70mm I think called The General. Two For the Road came after that. That was 43 years ago so my memory could be foggy

I live in Asheville and didn’t realize Epic closed this theater. It doesn’t surprise me that they let the theater go downhill. Epic is a spin off chain from Carmike which to me really sucks as a theater chain. It is running a close second to Frank Theaters.
I will say, the Epic is beautiful and run very well.

Since the Muvico project fell through, why don’t they just purchase this theatre and reopen it.

You need to correct the information on this theatre. It was actually located on the corner of Tunnel Rd and Swannanoa River Rd. It now houses a Walgreens drug store and a Loews.
