Just noticed that the overview description at the top of this page seems to have incorrect seating numbers. The quoted numbers are for standard seats but do not include the number of premium seats.

The correct numbers are as follows (taken directly from the ‘Auditorium Information’ page on Empire Cinemas website whilst this cinema was owned and run by them.

Screen 4 – 160 seats (56 premium) Screen 5 – 160 seats (56 premium) Screen 6 – 53 seats (18 premium) Screen 7 – 156 seats (42 premium) Screen 8 – 128 seats (42 premium) Screen 9 – 108 seats (30 premium) Screen 10 – 81 seats (21 premium) Screen 11 – 84 seats (32 premium) Screen 12 – 81 seats (21 premium) Screen 13 – 79 seats (31 premium) Screen 14 – 79 seats (31 premium) Screen 15 – 80 seats (20 premium) Screen 16 – 81 seats (21 premium) Screen 17 – 108 seats (30 premium)

Perhaps an Admin could edit the info above?

Screen 3 was originally to be an identical version of Screen 2 (IMPACT: Blue) which has 185 seats. Cineworld obviously rebranded Screen 2 to Superscreen. Screen 3 however is not a Superscreen. Think I have only watched one movie in Screen 3 so unfortunately, I am unable to confirm if it does indeed have the same number of seats. I shall try to ask a member of staff when next at this cinema.

Hadn’t really noticed that the large sheltered entrance to this cinema looks to be empty inside. The glass area certainly isn’t to allow daylight into the foyer area as it’s artificial light only inside and there’s not much of that!

It’s been almost 20 years since I first visited this cinema, back when it was run by Odeon. Can’t remember the layout of what it was like back then. I’m guessing from the planning application that you linked to that four auditoria from the original site layout were sold and changed into one or more restaurants which now exist on either side of the cinema as you face the entrance from the car park. Then the cinema was extended further back within the complex.

Everything is more or less on one (ground) level with the exception of a few steps into some of the smaller screens. There are a number of long thin corridors which occasionally take a 90-degree turn left or right into other long thin corridors. Looking at the photos of the auditoria entrances will give a better picture of this.

I am always interested to learn more about cinemas. Find some of the back stories and changes made over the years to be quite interesting.

On the subject of auditoria sizes and shapes, in an ideal world what are the best proportions for IMAX and non-IMAX screens?

Thanks for the detailed information and links. ;o)

Didn’t realise that non-IMAX cameras could be used for scenes that are shown as 1.43:1 or 1.9:1 ratio on IMAX screens.

Lucy is judged by many to be a reference quality 4K UHD movie.

@CF100

Would you happen to know the size of the current 17-screen Cineworld, Hemel Hempstead? I’m trying to gauge how big the new 9-screen Cineworld, Watford, which is 40,000 sq feet, is going to be in relation to other cinemas that I have visited?

Also, would you happen to know of any other multiplexes in the UK that are of a similar size (40,000 sq ft)?

Found this piece of information interesting bearing in mind the amount of overseas IMAX auditoria that exist especially in the U.S.

“In less than a year since its opening, the IMAX Leicester Square ranked as the world’s highest-grossing IMAX site for the 2014 blockbuster thriller Lucy.“

Will do.

I hope to visit and watch a movie in the IMAX auditoria as soon as possible (depending on what is being shown at the time) after it opens to the public.

@CF100

Was the presentation of Mission: Impossible – Fallout in IMAX 3D? I watched it on the opening day in 2D but then on seeing this review where it was awarded the maximum score of 35/35, had considered travelling to Hemel Hempstead to watch it again, this time in IMAX 3D. Sadly, didn’t manage to and it has today been replaced by Ant-Man and the Wasp.

https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2454659/to-3d-or-not-to-3d-buy-the-right-mission-impossible—-fallout-ticket

Be interested to hear your comments on the 3D effect considering this was a post-production conversion, as are most movies, and not natively shot in 3D.

I enjoyed the movie and even rewatched all of the other five movies in the franchise before and after this latest instalment in the franchise.

The scenes in Kashmir during the final act, were they the only ones filmed using IMAX cameras and opened up to fill the whole screen? I had expected the Burf Khalifa scene in Ghost Protocol to have been filmed in IMAX but alas I don’t believe it was? It certainly isn’t listed on the wiki list of movies filmed using IMAX cameras.

The new intu shopping centre redevelopment in Watford have set an opening date of 27th September 2018 for the 4-storey Debenhams store as phase one of the opening. No other details have yet been released with regards to the opening date of the new Cineworld 9-screen cinema which includes an IMAX screen. Had hoped it would open this month.

Presumably one of the Cinema Treasures Admin team will create a new page for it once it’s official release date has been officially announced?

Similar but slightly smaller than the IMAX at Cineworld, Hemel Hempstead (18.3m x 10m and 281 seats). If sat in the centre of row G the screen does seem big in relation to the depth of the auditoria imo.

The seats do look good and rather swanky compared to other IMAX cinemas that I’ve visited.

@CF100

As always, thanks for providing such detailed info, that is some great drilling down you’ve managed there! ;o)

The picture and sound quality is good but not outstanding. I think the last movie I watched in screen 12 (largest auditoria) was Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017.

Agree with you that this cinema could and is probably due a refurbishment (opened ~Easter 2008 unless I’m mistaken).

The four VIP boxes at the very back of the auditoria are not as great as they may sound. After watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens here, I popped into the leftmost box (as you face the screen) to check what they were like. Ceiling lights inside the box were on during the end movie credits. There was a lot of reflections on the glass (floor to ceiling) wall in front. Far more than I’d be able to cope with watching a movie. I am unsure if that is still the case when the ceiling lights are off? Each box has it’s own 5.1 surround sound system. None of the VIP boxes are located central to the screen which would be reason enough for me not to want to spend money on one of these tickets. The leftmost and rightmost boxes are almost right in the corners of the auditoria and as such one of the the worst locations possible imo.

For a screen consisting of ~534 seats (13 rows x 51 seats) it’s a shame that there’s no VIP seat option outside of the VIP boxes (2/3 the way back as in most Vue cinemas).

Don’t know what brand the rear array speakers are but I shall try to get a closer look or ask a member of staff the next time I watch a movie there which might be soon.

A top-notch Dolby Atmos installation would and could be amazing given the size of this auditoria.

Not sure how well this cinema is doing compared to Empire, High Wycombe but I’ve rarely ever seen it busy or packed.

Having to pay for parking (it shares the same multi-storey parking as the rest of Eden Shopping Centre) is one of the reasons I don’t visit this cinema more often. Empire, High Wycombe for example has always been free.

Years ago, Cineworld introduced Bargain Tuesday, whereby all 2D movies cost just £3.95 all day on Tuesday. In response Empire Cinemas matched that deal (Sav£rday Tuesday) then also added Thursday. Prices were even reduced further over a number of years all the way down to £2.95 on Tues at Empire, High Wycombe cinema which was amazing value for an evening performance. Sav£rday Thursday was dropped (apparently because it didn’t attract enough customers) and the ticket prices on Tuesday has slowly increased since. Currently, *from £4.50 (dependent on site location). Still good value.

During this time Cineworld quietly dropped their Bargain Tuesday offering. Signing up (free) for a MyCineworld used to give customers 10% off online bookings and there was no credit card surcharge. The latter was dropped and now a MyCineworld account carries a £4.95 per year fee.

Obviously, any long-time customers who have got used to various promotions then seen them disappear over the years won’t be best pleased and the fact that this cinema has had no refurbishment that I am aware of over the course of a decade since opening doesn’t exactly make me feel like the increased cost of watching a movie here is money well spent compared to travelling to Empire, High Wycombe which is far easier and closer for me to get to.

One design concept introduced, as part of The Film Works rebranding, that I very much like is their “black box” auditoria to improve viewing. The auditoria at this cinema retain that interior look even after Empire Cinemas took over. During a movie, all ceiling lights are switched off, something that no other cinema chains that I visit seem to do. I’ve emailed both Vue and Cineworld regarding how distracting it can be to have to sit through a movie with bright ceiling lights remaining lit and their response is that they have no choice due to health and safety requirements.

How is it then Empire Cinemas do not have to obey these requirements?

The backlit THX sign outside the old screen 1 was similar in concept to this:

When I watched Reel Steel at this cinema back in October 2011 the Wurlitzer was played before the performance began.

At the time this was the closest to Full HD video quality I had ever seen on a cinema screen. Does anyone happen to know which projector they would have been using at that time?

Shame they have stairs running right through the centre of so many rows as that is where I prefer to sit, directly in line with the centre of the screen.

I’m not 100% on the dates that ownership changed hands but unless I’m mistaken this cinema went through the following:

CIC > UCI > Odeon > The Filmworks > Empire

Unless I’m mistaken the super comfortable original red velour seats were all changed to ultra-cheap (plastic backed, barely padded armrest plus cup holders) around the mid-90’s. This was due to a number of the original seats being damaged or becoming tired looking and to have them refurbished would have cost too much.

Seem to recall the overhaul (conversion to stadium seating and renumbering the auditoria numbers from 5, 3, 1, 2, 4, 6 to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) happened around the early 00’s.

One difference I have remembered between the original Wycombe 6 seats and Empire (screen 1), LSQ was that the latter reclined slightly (rocker style) when you leaned back. The Wycombe 6 seats did not, they were fixed. They did have headrests though and may well be identical to those you linked to from Empire (screen 2) LSQ?

Shame I didn’t take more photos back in those days. The backlit sign for screen 1 (This auditorium is THX certified) for example. I do still have one of the original ‘This Theatre Features DTS Digital Sound’ plaques somewhere from this cinema.

The below-linked mentions this screen is the world’s second largest (presumably after Lotte Cinema Super Plex G Theater World Towe, Seoul, South Korea which is 34m wide) at 32m wide and up to 23m high.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BawBczQGGiQ

Surprised it doesn’t have more seats (480). TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, for example, is 28.65m wide x 14.02m high and has 986 seats (the most of any IMAX auditoria worldwide).

As I suspected, the Cineworld seating layout page is way off scale. Probably just a generic image used for the screen of any and all auditoria across the whole of their website?

These licensing plans that you post links for sure offer a level of detail one may otherwise never be privy to. Had not previously ever thought to search and look through any.

LARGE_screen_format
LARGE_screen_format commented about Cineworld Cinema - Leicester Square on Jul 3, 2018 at 7:49 am

When booking tickets online for IMAX at Cineworld, Leicester Square the width of the screen on the seating layout page surely can’t be to scale? It isn’t even as wide as the centre section of seats alone meaning anyone sat on the two side sections would be watching from a 45-degree angle.

If I’m not mistaken UCI Wycombe 6 had identical seats as those you mention from the good ole days at The Empire, Leicester Square and I agree they were super comfy.

I was really annoyed when they were replaced with inferior seats some years later but could understand the decision to replace rather than refurbish due to cost implications.

There’s an image of the Gallery luxury seats in this article:

If you do a google image search you’ll find others too. ;o)

Will endeavor to visit the Superscreen at Cineworld, O2, Greenwich at some point. It’s one of zappomatic’s favorite auditoria.

Watched Sicario 2: Soldado earlier today so there’s nothing else released until after the Odeon discount code expires that I want to see but haven’t already. Thanks for the heads up all the same. :o)

Would have been nice if that article you’ve linked to above included a list of all of the PLF sites.

What happened to HFR, haven’t heard it mentioned for years? I watched The Hobbit (first movie) in HFR and did not like it. The movie looked far too well lit and more like a tv drama than a Hollywood movie imo.

All of these contrast ratio’s pale in comparison to Dolby Cinemas 1,000,000:1! :O

Flagship laser projection (2 x Barco DP4K-60L) on the world’s largest cinema screen.

The DP4K-60L can easily be upgraded to HDR, which makes it the most future-proof projector available.

Would love to watch a movie on that screen.

Screen 9 (IMAX) measures an unimpressive 15.1m x 7.76m (smaller than Cineworld, Hemel Hempstead (18.3m x 10m) that I visit fairly often. Had I known that prior to purchasing tickets, I probably wouldn’t have bothered? Two tickets plus food cost the best part of £70. That’s over twice the cost of owning the movie on 4K UHD (including regular BluRay).

Used to watch quite a few movies at this cinema back around the mid 00’s. Usually two to four movies in one day (Sundays). The two largest screens (numbers 10 & 11?) seemed a decent size at the time. The smallest screen with a mere four rows seemed more like a private screening room and to date is the smallest cinema auditoria that I have ever watched a movie in.

The luxury leather seats in the Gallery sections are the most comfortable I have tried at any cinema (I have yet to visit a cinema that has luxury electric recliners). Shame, that they are only available to customers willing to pay ~£24 per ticket. Yes, the price includes popcorn/drinks but if one does not want either of those then the uplift charge of over £10 compared to a non-Gallery seat seems rather high!

LARGE_screen_format
LARGE_screen_format commented about Cineworld Cinema - Leicester Square on Jun 30, 2018 at 4:42 pm

Highly unlikely to happen but I wish Cineworld would upgrade the seats in the LSQ IMAX auditoria to luxury leather recliners. A number of Odeon Luxe and Showcase de Luxe cinemas across the country have or are being upgraded to those so why can’t/shouldn’t Cineworld’s ‘flagship’ cinema be able to match those?

I watched Rampage in IMAX at Odeon, Greenwich. Not the largest IMAX screen but was passing the area with a friend of mine who had never been to this cinema and I had often mentioned it having watched many movies there in the mid 00’s (before IMAX was installed). Odeon’s food offering there is significantly better than that found at Cineworld, Empire or Vue cinemas imo.
