I was living in beautiful Puerto Rico back in 1966 and I remember advertisements in the movie section of the English Language Newspaper “The San Juan Star” about who was Charmian Carr and that you would be able to see her in Puerto Rico. This of course was to get your intrest up, because as time went on the papers let on that she played Liesl in “The Sound of Music”.

The widescreen, large-format cinematography, 70mm TODD-AO, 6 track stereophonic sound, music filled soundtrack, presentation was shown as a reserved seat “roadshow” engagement at this theater. It opened on March 30, 1966. Usually when it played, it would be for a long time, alas, I do not know how long it played here.

In Latin America Spanish it was called: “La Nonicia Rebelde”, “The Rebellious Novice”.

Not very much information is given about this theater, Did it show other “roadshow” movies? If my information is for the wrong theater, or you have more information on this theater, please email us!

I was thinking about “The Sound of Music” playing in Downtown Chicago for over two years, and if that was some kind of a record so I did some checking.

It played, reserved seat at the Dominion Theater in London, England for 170 WEEKS (that’s 3 YEARS and 14 WEEKS in one theater!).

If a projectionist worked a 5 day week and only ran 6 shows (it could be as many as 8 depending on which days they work when matinees play) and taking into account vacations the projectionist would see and hear SOM about 380 times!

It played in Sydney, Australia at a combination of the Mayfair and Paris Theaters for a total of 180 WEEKS (that’s 3 YEARS and 24 WEEKS!).

Tell us more about “the legendary (and difficult) Oscar Brotman.” I’ve forgotten, what theaters did he have?

Yes I seem to remember “The Sound of Music” being at the Loop. It started out at the Michael Todd as a roadshow in 70mm TODD-AO on March 17, 1965 and ran for 93 WEEKS! That would mean it wouldn’t be able to get to the Loop till the end 1966. So after I typed the preceding I looked at the list of movies that JRS40 listed and both tombrueggemann and myself missed The “Sound of Music” listed at 12/28/1966! So it played another 16 weeks that we know of downtown. That’s a total of 109 weeks it played in a row!

Trying to reconstruct what happened 95 years ago can be sorta confusing and it turns out the organ information I gave above was for two different organs mixed into one which is sota what happened, I think, but let me start all over.

WurliTzer, Opus 22, a 2 Manual/7 Rank was shipped to this theater on June 8, 1913. Additions and/or alterations were made on July 15, 1913.

WurliTzer, Opus 745, a 2/3 was shipped to the Forest Theater in this same town on December 4, 1923. It was reposessed and parts went to this theater on June 1, 1927. Those parts (perhaps the entire organ?)then went on to a private owner in Louisville, Kentucky in 1960.

If you know anything else about what happened to these organs, please email us!

Why isn’t a WIDESCREEN WEEKEND done here each year as is done in Great Britain? Just think, a whole weekend with, 3-strip CINERAMA and 70mm “CINERAMA”, 3-strip CINEMIRICLE, 3-strip KINOPANORAMA, 70mm TODD-AO etc.! Everyone should bug the heck out of the Gods in charge of the Seattle CINERAMA. To see what we are missing see: View link

Brian Morton and everyone else – live theater sounds great, but it’s a shame for a theater to not be used in between productions. Special movies that wouldn’t be shown at a multiplex could be the answer. There are cinemas around that are fairly successful showing special films in between live productions. These theaters need to be found and then copied.

Does the theater have landmark status? Who owns the building?

Actually to keep things as accurate as possible a small edit to my October 31, 2006 post. The additions or alterations to the organ were substantial enough to change the organ to Opus 32.

WOW! And they have that weekend evey year! What a weekend that must be!

If Great Britain can have a weekend of 3 strip CINERAMA and 70mm films, why can’t the CINERAMA Dome and the Seattle CINERAMA both not manage to do the same thing each year? We should all contact both theaters and ask them that!

It was reposesed and rebuilt as Opus 61 a 2 Manual/6 Rank and shipped to this theater on June 4, 1915. Another Console was added on January 18, 1916.
