Bijou Theater

The Bijou was a ten-cent movie house that was in operation around 1909. That year, the operator, T. C. Penney, was arrested for operating a theater on Sunday in violation of a local statute. The court decided in Mr. Penney’s favor, as the statute prohibited the operation of a theater, and the court concluded that the exhibition of movies did not qualify as a theatrical enterprise under the terms of the statute, despite the fact that the Bijou was advertised as a theater.
